Certification Proliferation - the real costs and meanings of the cute seals on your natural and organic skincare products

The natural personal care is beset with a bevy of certification options for products, all proclaiming products to be pure, clean, and healthy.  The state the industry has gotten to is that there is so much confusion over various ingredients, production methods and safety issues that no one seal covers it all.  Every seal offers some level of assurance to customers, an extra bump of supposed confidence that you are purchasing something wholesome.  We all want to feel good about what we're using and the fear generated by so many of the industry uncertainties regarding ingredient safety, true naturalness, labeling trickery and complications, and profiteering is indeed enough to make heads swim.

There are many reasons why a company may choose to certify products and many reasons they may choose not to.  Not every product lacking a seal is an uhealthy or "bad" choice.  Not every product carrying a seal is the best item available.  An intelligent consumer should be asking questions beyond the pretty icon adorning the products they purchase.  As an industry veteran of 10+ years that has seen the organic program evolve and various certifications rise, thrive, or fail and done a good bit of research into the pros and cons of each I'd like to illuminate some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of certifications.

The Cost of Certification

As a manufacturer I am all too aware that the certification process for any program also comes with fees for the participating company.  Some are no tiny investment and can eat up a significant chunk of a small company's yearly revenues for nothing more than the right to use a logo on products.  Certifications are simplifed statements for a flawed world in which we've reached the point where we have difficulty just trusting the companies that sell us the wares we use.

Well+Good NYC is reporting that Non-GMO certification from the NonGMO Project is set to be the next certification label popping up on skincare and beauty products.

You can check out their article on their site.

If you read through you'll note that at the end of the article it says that "for a small, boutique beauty brand looking to get the label onto its five-ingredient product, the cost could be as low as a few hundred dollars."

The first thing that pops into my mind reading this is that a typical Blissoma skincare recipe has 20 to 30 ingredients per formula.  That's a lot more than 5.  I know few skincare brands producing products with only 5 ingredients, namely our friends at S.W. Basics of Brooklyn who are focused on streamlined, minimalist formulations and do a good job of it.  Blissoma works with synergies of herbs that all work towards common purposes, and we love including as many herbs in a product as makes sense to generate active levels, a pleasant feel, and achieve something that works for whatever purpose we're intending.  Generally that number is somewhere between 8 and 15 herbs in any recipe then plus oils, emulsifiers, antioxidants, and our plant based, natural preservation.

We currently have 15 skincare products and 6 more in the apothecary genre not counting perfumes.  If a 5 ingredient product costs several hundred dollars to certify we'll guess they mean $200.  We could extrapolate pretty fairly that a 20 ingredient product would cost at least $400 even if we don't multiply it out completely by the number of ingredients - maybe they give a volume discount.  Multiply that times 21 products and you get a total bill of $8400.

This is an estimate just based on the article, the dollar figured mentioned therein, and extrapolated by our product complexity and volume but it gives you some idea what the cost can be.

That is currently as much as it would cost us to provide a company health insurance policy for 6 months.  Or more than it could cost us to formulate and introduce a new product.  Also more than it would cost us for most of the equipment upgrades we'd like to get to improve our operations.  $8400 is nothing to sneeze at.

While this is an insignificant cost to a large manufacturer it is prohibitive for a bootstrapped boutique beauty brand.  In fact this non GMO certification is a higher cost than what it would take for us to become a NOP Certified Organic Handler and have our facilities inspected and some of our products actually certified organic.  Organic Certification the last time I checked had a base cost of about $2500 to 3000 for yearly inspections and audits.  There's probably additional fees, but the inspection fee and the extra labor cost it would take us to manage the paper trail is why we haven't done that yet either.  In fact the NonGMO site itself says  many of its members first have an organic certification and then the NonGMO designation to go with it.

I can't help but feel that the proliferation of certifications like this with price tags in the thousands of dollars represents less about purity issues and more about marketing.  Only the big guys can afford to do it, and so it generates "confidence" in a product that may actually be fundamentally lower in medicinal, therapeutic quality and overall efficacy.  Keep reading below for an easy food comparison that demonstrates what I mean by this.

If I am giving it to you straight I have to tell you that after years of shopping at, selling to, and dealing with the natural beauty products sold in natural grocery locations my belief at this point is that if you are on a truly strict budget and can't afford a premium line of skincare you are better off using just plain organic oils like straight organic jojoba, rosehip, and fresh aloe gel or wildcrafted, or bulk herbs on your face than almost any product that you can pick up at Whole Foods that costs less than $15.  Notice I say almost, there are exceptions to anything and I will explain my thinking below. (natural and organic bar soaps and simple salves come to mind as likely exceptions, but I'm talking predominantly about facial care anyway in this post)

Why do I think this?

Because regardless of certification I know exactly how that retailer and the natural food industry in general works, and how many marketing dollars are built into every one of those already slim price tags.  Free fill (where you give them initial stock for free), discounts, reps to service the stores, product demonstrations, samples, free shipping, etc....  If a product is only costing $15 to begin with and the manufacturer has to fit all those incentives into the WHOLESALE price of the product the sad reality is that you are probably paying more for the plastic bottle, pump, and label than you are for the product inside.  There is just no room to pay for the best ingredients AND a hefty marketing budget, certifications, your employees, facilities, and all the other costs of doing business.  I tried, and I am a crazy budgeter with real skills at running a thrifty operation.  We couldn't do it, which is part of why we left that sales environment.

You get what you pay for, and with some lines you are paying mostly for the certifications, packaging, distribution, and marketing and advertising.  If it seems like the ingredients list is filled with fancy sounding actives but the product has a cheap price you should be asking questions and lots of them.  There is very much such a thing as "too good to be true."

There are a plethora of certification options available to those companies that can afford them.  Shoppers are often confused about what various certifications mean and how natural or organic that really means the product is.  If you happen to be interested in purchasing a product that has seals you need to interpret, then here is a primer with links to the associated websites.

Major Natural and Organic Personal Care Certifications include:

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) - allows display of the familiar green organic seal for food and qualifying personal care products.  There has been difficulty over time for many personal care products to fit into this standard as the shelf life expectancy is longer and "preservatives" are prohibited in organic products.  Therefore products that fit into this model are made entirely of food ingredients and may include a lot of oil based products that do not require preservation against bacteria and molds.  Dry products like powdered scrubs and masks can also work well for this standard.

NSF/ANSI 305 - A standard developed for the "Made with Organic Ingredients" personal care products so that personal care specific ingredients and processes could be monitored and certified to a natural standard.  This can work in conjunction with NOP certification.

Natural Products Association Seal - a USA based "natural" certification for personal care products, developed in part because of the confusion over personal care not fitting well into the NOP standards.  The Natural Products Association is a trade industry group so effectively this is a self-monitoring seal with standards determined by member companies.

EcoCert - a European based standard for natural, organic, and ecological/sustainable products encompassing personal care, textiles, and farming.  Products certified to Ecocert are considered Certified Organic in the EU.

BDIH - a strict European standard for natural personal care and cosmetics, may include organic components or not but the entire product must be composed of BDIH approved natural/biological materials.  Americans are generally unfamiliar with this particular certification despite it's respected status and strict requirements in Europe.

Now we can add Non GMO Certified to this list. This certification means that even Certified Organic origin natural ingredients are tested for trace content of GMOs to ensure a lack of cross contamination of crops due to pollen drift or other issues.

In addition there are the two markings Blissoma bears, which have less to do with natural and organic and more to do with animal related practices:

Certified Cruelty Free - a certification from the Leaping Bunny program that denotes no animal testing in any products or in supplier raw materials.

Certified Vegan - a certification from Vegan.org that designates that no animal ingredients are used in products and no animal testing has been performed.

For standards not particular to personal care there is Fair Trade Certification, a great program, and Biodynamic Certification.  You can see how the list starts to become a little dizzying.

This is by no means an exhaustive list.  There are groups like OASIS who tried to produce a meaningful standard but failed in part due to the fact that the board is made up of giant corporations like Aveda, Hain Celestial (owners of Alba, Avalon, Zia and more personal care brands), and L'Oreal in addition to some smaller natural companies.  It is difficult to create a meaningful certification standard when your board is populated by the very people that are making money off of sliding toxic ingredients into so many products.  No one really uses this seal and it fizzled almost as soon as it was written.

For a small personal care producer the Cruelty Free certification and Vegan certifications are among the most approachable.  The fees are less than $1000 and the paperwork achievable even with a modest staff.  One has to send a lot of inquiries back and forth to ingredient suppliers requesting signatures and detailed process information to make sure no animal traces or testing is being included anywhere in their process but this can be accomplished in a matter of a month or 2.

Why Seals Are Only a Part of True Quality

Many of the lovely, local farms I am near and eat food from are simply too small to afford organic certification.  I eat their food anyway because I know the people that grew it and trust them.  Their food is no less fundamentally clean just because they lack a seal.   A seal can mean a lot or very little depending on the company that has gotten it and the product it is on.  Seals are supposed to make it easier to do your shopping, but they are certainly not the last word in quality.

Many ingredients coming from developing countries face challenges with certification.  Years ago when I was starting you could not find a Certified Organic Shea Butter because all the indigenous villages producing it were too poor to pay the fees.  It was only as bigger business moved in that a Certified Organic Shea Butter appeared for purchase.  This sometimes disenfranchised village based producers as bigger companies took over their resources.  The small producer's butter was not grown with pesticides - in most cases was completely organic but just not certified.  Many socially minded natural products companies like Moksa Organics have chosen to at times prioritize Fair Trade over Certified Organic ingredients when they are assured of the cleanliness of the ingredient despite a lack of certfication.  This is because of the holistic benefit to the community through Fair Trade.  You can read about their Shea Butter procurement process and the importance of the benefit of Fair Trade to some ingredients on their blog.

Say you have a choice of eating a processed, frozen, packaged veggie burger made of altered grains, soy proteins, and other manufactured foods and eating a freshly prepared salad made from greens from a local, small, uncertified organic farm.  One is decidedly more natural than the other, but the veggie burger can bear a seal while your salad will not.  Which is higher in nutrients?  Which is actually better for you?  I think you know the answer.  The less processed food, despite lacking a seal, is the better choice.  But the veggie burger with its clever packaging, ease of use, and perhaps multiple seals assuring you it is tremendously wholesome makes a compelling case to the overwhelmed shopper.

In the end it is up to the consumer to remain educated, dig deeply past marketing gimmicks, and look for real substance.  No one can do that for you.  Not even a seal or certification.

Certifications Are About Trust

What if you trusted the companies that made your products to be honest about what they make, seal or no?  Now THERE is a revolutionary idea!  The fundamental problem that seals attempt to address is a lack of trust and a lack of transparency.  What if you could believe that the company you purchase from had your best interests at heart instead of their own pocketbooks?  Not everyone is out to swindle or poison you and it is possible to find people that are genuinely making good, safe products.  This is the importance of developing a relationship with the companies with whom you shop. The more personal you get the easier it is to see when claims seem a little hollow or things just don't add up.  Are you supporting honest humans or a marketing machine?  A seal won't tell you that.

Blissoma believes in being super pure.  We've made it our everyday business.  It's why we produce our own herb extracts by hand to ensure a lack of added preservatives, it's why we make our own products in house, and it's why we buy from suppliers we trust.  We are vegan and vegetarian, cruelty free, gluten free, petrochemical free, and more.  We hope someday to bear at least one more certification seal - which one we haven't entirely decided yet, and since it's a pricey move we're going to wait until we're good and sure.  Until then we're just concentrating on making a quality, clean product, which is what we'd be doing once we got the seal.  It won't be a big change other than paperwork to file and a fee to pay.

Seals and Certifications don't make a product or a company worth your dollar carte blanche.  Look for forthright information, people you can hold accountable, honesty and authenticity first.  If there's a seal, bonus!  But the reason to support any particular company goes so much deeper than a cute icon on their packaging.  But you're smart, so you probably knew that already.

Chai - a Beautiful, Homemade, Healthful Brew

I'm as big a fan of drinking herbs as I am of slathering them on my face.  One of the nicest, warmest herbal treats for your tastebuds is a cup of freshly brewed Chai.  Packed with spices it's a healthy, aromatic pick-me-up for your entire body.

Now, if all you've had is those powdered Chai drink mixes from the store then please, I beg you, listen up and put that bagged imitation down.  While recipes authentic to India may be closely guarded there's nothing to stop you from crafting up something incredibly tasty in your own kitchen.

Why fresh spices?
Firstly, fresh is always better.  Period.  I figure you probably already know this at some level.  It's not hard to brew an amazing cup of Chai from fresh, whole spices and quality tea and it's even a fun process to blend it up.

The spices common to Chai have benefits for your body as well as tempting flavor.  Black pepper, ginger, cardamom, fennel, cinnamon... these are warming, clarifying spices that can stimulate your immune system, help with digestion, and give you an energy boost.  Black pepper alone causes your digestion to work more efficiently, has antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and speeds the breakdown of fat cells!  Cardamom is an aphrodisiac and let's just say that even smelling the freshly cracked pods while preparing your tea blend will have you feeling quite delightful.

Only fresh spices are going to offer you any health perks.  A dehydrated, processed drink mix has been stripped of all the immediate power the botanicals originally had.  Not only that but the powdered milk and excess sugar add an extra level of undesirable.  For health and taste fresh brewed is the only way to drink your Chai.

The Lighter Lifestyle
Traditionally Chai is always brewed with milk and sugar.  Since I advocate limiting both these things in your diet there are a few other tweaks to be made to the traditional Chai to make it fit your light lifestyle.

Plant milks are abundantly available at most grocery stores these days, and if you can't access any you can make your own almond milk easy-peasy with a little planning.  Whether you choose rice, coconut, soy, or almond milk you can get a hit of the creamy stuff you crave without extra hormones, cholesterol, and saturated fat.  Which in the end means you can happily drink more Chai. (and you'll want to!)

For sugar or alternative sweeteners I brew with a minimum amount, perhaps just a teaspoonful of sweetener per cup.  You can use less or go without if you are a sugar-free master already.

Raw honey is my favorite choice for immune support.  All the extra enzymes, pollen and trace nutrients are a great boost for your system during cold and flu season.  Since I sometimes take this with my Echinacea tincture for regular protective benefits it's no big deal to reroute it to a cup of Chai instead.  Honey added during the steeping process will also help draw more flavor out of the spices as well.

If you want ultimate control then just add your choice of sweetener directly to each cup so you know just how much (or little) you are consuming.

Where to Shop
Since spices like cardamom can be kinda pricey at the regular grocery store or hard to find my recommendation is to take a little side trip to your favorite local ethnic grocery store.  Joy!  Delight!  Sensory stimulation!  A trip meandering among odd ingredients never fails to excite me for a day.  Bulk bags of spices that would cost 3 or 4 times as much at American grocery stores is the icing on the cake.
Being the herb, spice, and tea-aholic that I am I have bags laying about for all sorts of various purposes.  Should any apocalyptic disaster hit I'll have Chai and spices to last several months in, no problem.

If you don't have a funky ethnic grocery store near you then ordering online is the most economical option.

The Recipe
1 tsp whole or cracked black peppercorns
2 TBSP whole fennel seeds
1 tsp whole coriander seeds
1 tsp whole cloves
2 whole cinnamon sticks
24 whole green cardamom pods
2 TBSP powdered ginger
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 cup loose black tea (Assam, Ceylon, or other quality, unflavored black tea)*

*Substitute Rooibos red tea if you would like a fully caffeine free tea

Directions:
Measure black peppercorns, fennel, coriander, and cloves into blender or food processor.  Pulse several times until spices are broken into large chunks.  Transfer to a bowl.

Put cinnamon sticks into blender and pulse until broken into small pieces.  Transfer to the bowl with other spices.

Put whole cardamom pods in blender and pulse several times to break pods open.  Transfer to the mixing bowl.

Add ginger, nutmeg, and tea and stir thoroughly.  By this time your nose should be buzzing and your mood should be lifted!  Transfer to a tin for storage.

To Brew
1 cup water
1/2 cup plant milk of your choice (1/4 cup if you enjoy less creaminess)
1 TBSP chai spiced tea in tea ball or strainer
2 slices fresh ginger root (optional but a tasty addition)
Sweetener of your choice, Stevia, or skip it!

Boil water and add tea in the tea ball or strainer and your fresh ginger slices.  Remove from heat and steep for 5 minutes.  Add your plant milk and reheat until piping hot.  Pour into a cup and sweeten to taste as desired.

Drink to your health and beauty!
Ciao (or should I say Chai) for now.  *wink*

The Un-Resolution way to make Meaningful Changes

It's the day after New Year's Day, or, as I'm going to be thinking of it "Un-New-Year's-Day."
That's kind of like an Un-Birthday for those who know how Mad Hatters and March Hares operate.  There's a heck of a lot more Un-New-Year's-Days than there are New Year's Days but somehow we feel obliged to fit all our celebration and renewal into one solitary day.  Maybe you have to be mad to see the abundance of other days on which you could be evolving.  If so I'm quite possibly completely bonkers.  Just bonkers enough to think maybe you'd like to join me on this journey...

Change is an ongoing process, and resolutions made because of an arbitrary date are, in my opinion, more of a psychological "out" and a way to make ourselves feel like we are addressing change rather than fuel for real, substantial evolution. Change is a constant process and should be embraced each day.   Just like an Un-Birthday you can have your Un-New-Year's-Day anytime.
If you only resolve once per year to get "better" that is perhaps only a few dozen changes you may make in your life, only some of which will actually stick. If you approach change (and really change is growth) as a daily pursuit not only are your changes more likely to stick but the progress that can be made is virtually infinite. The very practice of embracing challenges and new thinking each day prepares you to be successful at it each time you make a change in the future. You can be fluid instead of stagnant, a master changer, and greeting your full potential openly.

If enlightenment is possible in a single lifetime then that is a big, but achievable mountain to climb.  Just think of the constant path you'll need to get there.  You certainly won't ever arrive at the summit by putting the climb off until tomorrow.

Come to your life with beginner's mind each day. Pick a corner and start nibbling away at the big things you want. Instead of making a resolution say "I'll just do this new thing for today."

Allowing yourself to experiment and practice a new behavior once or twice may make it less scary than resolving and "failing". Then the next time you just do it for a day it feels fulfilling instead of guilty and is associated in your mind with success instead of failure.

You can find the things that nourish you by experimenting and experimenting again, gradually incorporating the things that work and eliminating the things that don't.

Go completely mad with me. Let's be crazy!  Live in the now and let's Un-Resolve together.  Don't wait another whole year to embrace your desires.  After all it's Un-New-Year's-Day today and for the next 364 days.  That means it's time to celebrate some change, and you might as well celebrate it because some is on the way.  Love your now, but be ready to be better.

Now is all you have. Be Present Now.

The Trick to Keeping Positive (even when it's positively grueling)

Positivity.  Happiness.  Joy.
With so many different messages pushed our direction it's no wonder we end up confused and befuddled about why we still don't have lasting happiness.  After all, it's so easy, right?

Here's the word from a person usually seen publicly as a healing, inspirational, energetic, happy individual - Positivity is positively HARD sometimes.  Getting to happy and maintaining a light, bright mindset isn't always shiny.  In fact, sometimes it's like nails on a chalkboard, it's slogging through the mud, it's facing every icky, awful voice inside yourself and baring it in ways you might like to otherwise avoid.  It’s striving to give even when you feel like the whiny Kindergartener inside you would like to just throw a supernova style fit.

I still struggle with the idea of whether happiness should be a constant state of being.  Sometimes I just feel sad – deeply, intensely sad, and a smile feels like an impossible feat.  I can feel like I’ve fallen pretty far down my very own little mucky hole.  The quiet of the weekends and holidays is a particularly trying time for me as it is when I am “supposed” to be happy and have fun.  Instead it feels like a giant letdown mixed up soup of stress blowout that I’ve been trying to ride through all week.  It tends to implode on me by Saturday morning.  Blah.

Is this a personal weakness?  Does this mean I’m not nearly as spiritually secure and accomplished as I’d like to be?  Or is this acceptable and normal?  Does the Dalai Lama have “off” days?  I’m still wrestling with trying to divine answers to these things inside myself.

What I do know is that recovering from these funkety-funk lows often takes every trick I know and they often feel like hard, hard work to a bummed out, low energy me.  Despite being a natural and holistic health advocate I often wish there were an easy way out too.  (Where did I put my magic wand?)  Recovery takes effort and often not a small bit.  Mental discipline is also the toughest at the moments when you need it the most.

Even though I might feel like just wallowing in my lopsided mood I make myself meditate, do yoga, take a hot bath, employ some aromatherapy, repeat myself some positive mantras, fix some nourishing food that I know will boost my happy body chemistry, and what I honestly find to be most inspirational and tide-turning of all – look towards the other people in my life for a kick in the pants in the right direction.

Chances are that with 300+ online friends someone else might be happy even while I’m feeling down.  Since I’ve surrounded myself with a large network of encouraging, intelligent, kind, growth-oriented and truth-seeking souls oftentimes my Facebook, Twitter, or blog feed has just what I’m needing that day offered by someone who was on the up-and-up with the happy vibes.

When you’re feeling weak and low it might be time to let the smile of another bolster you.  If you have brought the right, reinforcing people into your life they’ll happily help keep you on the positive path.  Many times I have felt like others have been my guiding lights back out of the darkness, a little lifeline cast into the murky depths and towing me back to the boat.  Often all they need to do is just show they are gamely going through their days the best they can, and just by being another empathetic example I don’t feel so alone.  Sometimes like in this blog post by Juliana of the Peaceful Peacock called How to Be Courageous the message is much more direct – get up, dammit, no excuses.

Over time the wisdom offered by friends has saved me from sadness more times than I can count.  They fill my empty cup and quaff my thirst.

“Reach out your hand if your cup be empty.  If your cup is full may it be again.”  Robert Hunter, Ripple

Jasper Jones, a novel by Craig Silvey, features a key conversation between Charlie and his best friend about who is the better superhero, Superman or Batman.  Charlie's friend argues that Superman is better because of all his powers.  Charlie argues back that Batman is the greater hero because he’s just a regular guy who decides to do the right thing.  Because he isn’t invulnerable it is the courage to still stand against all that is evil despite being only human that elevates Batman.  I’ve kept this conversation close in my heart since reading it.  While I’m no Batman I do attempt to keep Batman style courage fervently in mind as I’m standing each day against my challenges.  I don’t have to be superhuman, I just have to keep striving.

In the end when the good side wins it’s because those who stand in hope and love never truly stand alone.  You may be out there at the forefront of your life battling your worst fears and feeling awfully exposed, but if you look just next to you I think you’ll find there’s someone else engaged in the same struggle.  They want to see you win, and the gift of continuing your own struggle is that they might see through to the victory in theirs as well.  Don’t give up, for goodness sake.  We all win when you keep at it.

I’m not perfect.  I’m not even positive all the time.  But dang it I’m out here trying.  My deepest gratitude goes to those who have gone before me as my teachers and guides.  Because of  your light my way has been a little brighter and my progress more possible.  I hope I can cast a line for a few others and pay the positive forward.  Soul warriors, spirit seekers, troubadours, lovers, and those awakening to all the possibilities – you’ve got a friend, and I hope that brings you Happiness.

Autumn Aromatherapy // What (and What Not) To Do

A change of seasons brings a fresh feel in the air, a softer color to the light as it's filtered through colored leaves, and a shift in our moods and cravings. The advent of fall also brings a return to work routines and many gatherings, both professional and just for fun. It always seems to go so fast, and you want to treasure each moment of carefree comfort. You can relish sitting on the porch in the evening with just a light jacket, gabbing with friends and stargazing into the cool autumn sky. The only chill you really get is just enough to make an excuse to snuggle closer to your date, who if you're lucky smells a little woodsy.

If you surround yourself with aromas apropos to fall it will help you to create rich, striking memories of this special time. Your sense of smell ties directly into the part of your brain where memories are stored, so it makes a perfect way to enhance your experience of seasonality...

Writing and pictures by yours truly with tips on great online suppliers, which natural essential oils to use, and ways to use them for get-togethers, home, and the office.  Mmmmm...Smells like fall to me.

One to Grow On - Organic Gardens + Giving

Right now you can help Blissoma grow something organic and good.

How, you ask? You might be sitting there in your pajamas, or in your latest sustainable fashion or thrift store score, or maybe a suit, or even your skivvies. Maybe you don't like to get dirty. Maybe you live in the middle of a concrete jungle with not a shovel in sight.

No worries, we'll do the digging.

If you've been with us since last year you might have seen that Blissoma is spearheading the start of a community garden on the 1400 block of Bremen Ave. in St. Louis, MO. The lot is just across the alley from our studio building. When we bought the building we had dreams of gardens, but were pigeonholed into purchasing a building that had minimal yard and building all around. Fate took care of that for us when the city-owned row houses across the alley from us were demolished. Photos of the buildings and their demolition are included in our initial garden post that you can read to catch up.

Over the last 1 1/2 years we have broken ground on more than 40'x40' of this massive lot. It's not easy work. As a former building site we have bricks and clay to contend with. To generate a safe and fertile bed for our plants we have hauled in more than 8 city dump trucks worth of compost, manure, and new soil materials. With them we have built what is essentially a giant raised bed for the plants.
This year we hope to triple the amount of cultivated land. We want to get big and we want to get big fast. To save the land from developers in future years we need to put down our footprint large and in charge. We hope to show our alderman and everyone in the area how a garden can change their quality of life.

It's a big lot - the size of 4 row houses. Here you can see the center of the lot where we put in a circular flower bed for last summer.
We are gearing up to try to cultivate most of the lot - at least as much as we can get to this year. It's rather magical turning weeds and bricks into flowers and food. Our hope is that the plot can be a teaching tool for local residents and a source of clean food, healthy activity, fun, and neighborhood beauty in a place that sorely needs it.
We're not alone here in St. Louis doing this growing thing. In fact some of the folks that inspire us most are working just over in Ferguson, MO.

Earthdance is a nonprofit founded by my friend Molly Rockamann. Molly had a big vision to save a 100+ year old organic farm in Ferguson from imminent development. The farm wasn't being used and the family owner was in her 90s. No one was cultivating the land and it broke her heart to think of such clean, fertile soil being graded for just another housing development.

Molly stepped in and created a nonprofit that would work the land and teach organic farming skills to others. She's our inspiration and the agricultural instigator for dozens of "Farmies" now. Each year a new group of apprentices heads to the farm to be taught how to plant and maintain crops sustainably. Those Farmies then head out into the wide world to spread organic skills wherever they go. Approximately 30 Farmies are working Earthdance this year. They're bringing sustainable produce to farmers markets, a small CSA, and local stores and eateries. More importantly they're "growing" the future of organic farming.

Molly brings people together to work and to play. With Earthdance the phrase FARMS stands for Food, Art, Relationships and Music - Sustainably. Life revolves around their plants. Earthdance folks love a good song and some good greens - and sometimes songs about greens!

To support Earthdance and our community garden we're hosting One to Grow On now through 5/31/12. Every purchase on our home website http://www.iriestar.com will contribute to One to Grow On.

For every $10 spent on our website for the program's duration we will give:
$1 toward supplies to grow our Blissoma sponsored community garden
$1 toward Earthdance nonprofit organic farming programs
$1 back to you

This means that 20% of our gross website sales for more than a month and a half will be going to directly support the expansion of organic farming in our local community. You'll save 10% off your order total for yourself as long as your order totals more than $10.

No coupon code is needed. In fact you don't need to do anything special to contribute. Just show up, buy what you love from us, and your purchase contributes to the giving fund. Blissoma Skincare is now Certified Vegan

VEGAN SKINCARE
Blissoma's facial skincare collection is now entirely Vegan.

Previously the only thing preventing our line from being Vegan was the Lactoperoxidase enzyme used as part of our preservation blend. It was natural, but milk-derived. Based on new ingredients introduced into the natural skincare world we have been able to update our recipes to another natural and vegan blend. After 3 years and a great deal of reformulation and testing we are proud to introduce our updated recipes.

Products affected are:
Awake Morning Facial Moisture
Peace Evening Facial Creme
Lift Intelligent Energy Creme
Smooth A+ Moisture Serum
Refine Clay Renewal Treatment
Amend Antioxidant Lotion
Fresh Mild Rice Cleanser changed to the new preservation system last fall.

The system consists of several components. One is Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate which is an isolated peptide produced by the bacteria that ferments Kimchii. Pretty cool! The second component used is an Aspen Bark Extract which is a rich source of antimicrobial Salicylates, much like willow bark extracts. We have also added Gluconolactone, which produces gluconic acid that helps acidify and assist the other two extracts.

This means our entire facial care range is now Vegan as well as still being one of the cleanest, most active and results oriented natural skincare lines available. We have applied for the Certified Vegan seal with Vegan.org and will update everyone when we hear more back from them.

Peace and Lift have also had several other tweaks to their formulas.
We have REMOVED the vitamin ACE peptide blend we were previously using based on client concerns about the safety of Retinyl Palmitate. We believe the evidence surrounding this ingredient is still developing, and are not taking any particular position about it's relative safety other than that at the time we included it in our original formulations the data we had on hand suggested that it was a safe and nonirritating form of Vitamin A. Until further research comes out we have discontinued its use in both these products and will not use it in upcoming formulations. We believe strongly in evidence and not hype. We also want to provide you safe products.

Instead of the vitamin ACE peptide combination you'll see Tocopherol and Tocopheryl Acetate in both of these recipes now, which are both forms of Vitamin E. Our mixed Tocopherols come from non GMO soy source. Tocopheryl Acetate is a stabilized vitamin E created by reacting Tocopherols with Acetic acid (the same acid as in vinegar). Both contribute to antioxidant activity and topical benefits.

We will be planning new formulas that will include Vitamin C as a key active. No suitable replacement was available that would have kept our current moisturizer formulations at the same price. As we use unrefined, nutrient rich oils and botanicals as the base for all our products you are already getting a wide profile of naturally occurring vitamins and we expect you will notice no significant difference in product performance.

Lift has also had an update to the herb blend. Organic Nettles have been substituted for the seaweeds in this formula to give the product a cleaner lavender aroma. The Organic Evening Primrose and Organic Grapeseed Oils have been boosted in concentration as well to increase the product's suitability for dry skin types. We think you'll love these changes.

Below are the updated ingredients lists for all the affected products. We can't wait to finally share them with the Vegan community.
